PRESS RELEASE
NGOs to Discuss Legal Frameworks and Enabling Environment
Non-governmental organisations in Grenada will meet on March 23rd, 2017 at the Players Level 1n National Stadium Conference Room. to review the report of a study that was undertaken of the legal frameworks and enabling environment for the operation of NGOs in the region. The study was commissioned by the regional NGO Caribbean Policy Development Centre based in Barbados, under the aegis of a regional project , Support to Facilitate Participation of CARIFORUM Civil Society in the Regional Development and Integration Process, funded by the European Union. The study reviewed the legislative processes and frameworks governing the establishment, registration and operations of NGOs in the region and how these processes/frameworks constrained or enhanced the fulfillment of NGO mandates and affected the impact of their work.
Increasingly, it is officially acknowledged that non-governmental organisations and the wider civil society make significant contributions to national development processes. However, these organisations are beset by many challenges including dependence on donors for financing, reduced financing and a legal framework which does not consider the particular characteristics and role of NGOs.
The review session which will take place on March 23rd in Grenada is one of a series being held across the region by the CPDC. Out of these sessions, it is expected that there will be concensus on recommendations that should be made to inform the appropriate legislative framework that will empower NGOs and facilitate greater collaboration with the public and private sector.
This review session is the second activity taking place in Grenada under this regional European Union-funded project, Support to Facilitate Participation of CARIFORUM Civil Society in the Regional Development and Integration Process In January, NGOs met to review a proposed Code of Conduct and Ethics for Regional NGOs.
The NGO Caribbean Policy Development Centre, is partnering with its national affiliate, the Inter Agency Group of Development Organisations, in the hosting of this activity in Grenada. Mr. Gordon Bispham, Executive Director of the CPDC, will be the principal facilitator.
